809 was an artist-run exhibition space that provided a venue for the discussion and dissemination of local, national, and international contemporary art. 809 was located within a garage in the residential community Kensington. Because it was surrounded by houses and dwellings it had the advantage of spreading the consciousness of contemporary art to a broader and hopefully unsuspecting audience. 809 aims to provide a supportive experience for the artists exhibited and encouraged all mediums and methods of art making. As another alternative space to commercial galleries and government funded artist-run centers, 809’s approach to supporting art was flexible and almost bureaucracy-free. It was the aim of 809 to spread appreciation and initiate new and exciting art in Calgary.
